The North of England Paediatric Emergency Medicine Network (NEPEM) was established in July 2009.
It is an informal network of paediatricians, emergency physicians, Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Specialists, Nurse Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals with an interest in PEM who are located across the North of England.
The network facilitates
• CPD meetings
• Multicentre audit and research
• Collaborative guideline development
• Professional networking
NEPEM will help the Association of Paediatric Emergency Medicine (APEM) to promote PEM, increase communications between PEM practitioners and promote the APEM biannual meetings with CEM and the RCPCH.
Meetings are held several times each year (either 2 or 3 times per year depending on whether the meeting is a whole day or a half day) with each meeting being hosted by a different unit. The meeting format tends to be CPD followed by a social event in the evening (either drinks or dinner).
The next meeting is to be organised by Myra Herbert from Sunderland and is likely to be held in the North East of England.
At present NEPEM has engaged a multi-centre audit into the management of limping children involving units all over the North of England.
For further details about this audit please contact Andrew.Rowland@pat.nhs.uk
Since the introduction of NEPEM interest in the network has increased and we share ideas and pose PEM-questions to each other by e-mail, in order to help advance clinical care and improve the network.
At the first NEPEM meeting “Officers” were appointed as follows:
Julie Flaherty: Nurse Consultant, Hope Hospital, Manchester
Mary Ryan: PEM Consultant, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool
Currently Vacant – will need a volunteer at the next meeting
Research, Audit & Guidelines Lead:
Andrew Rowland: PEM Consultant, The Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust (North Manchester)
These posts are reviewed at each meeting and anyone interesting in taking on a role is more than welcome to.
